Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

The spare under the planter by the side door is gone. Everyone in the family swears they did not take it, the planter has clearly been shifted, and you have no idea how long ago that happened.

In plain words

When a key disappears, cutting yourself another copy solves the wrong half of the problem. You can get in again, but so can whoever finds the original. A same-visit rekey turns that around: the locksmith works through each cylinder the missing key operated, fitting new bottom pins on a conventional lock or resetting a homeowner-rekeyable one through its own procedure, and refits the lock to the door. The lost key still slides into the keyway but no longer lifts the pins to the right height, so it turns nothing. You leave with fresh keys cut on site and the same locks you already had.

The call
The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally. Four are unaccounted for.

How the visit goes

Open metal case with brass pins and coiled springs sorted in small sections, with tweezers and a brass tool in front.
  1. Scene 1

Where the tenant and landlord line falls

Rented and shared buildings add a boundary that the locksmith maps early. A tenant's suite door is theirs to use but a lock change is agreed with the landlord, who receives keys as well. A condominium suite cylinder may sit on the building's master system, so its rekey is planned so the master still works, and the lobby, garage and amenity doors stay with the corporation. A small business rekeying a shop door checks what the lease says about the landlord holding a key. Sorting this out on the doorstep keeps every party informed and lets the work proceed with no surprise phone calls the following week.

  2. Scene 2

Removing the cylinder without disturbing the door

Each cylinder comes off in the way its lock allows, and the door itself is never cut or drilled. A knob or lever lock releases its cylinder once the knob is slipped off its spindle and a retaining clip or cap is eased back. A deadbolt cylinder comes out when the interior thumb-turn assembly is unscrewed and the housing lifts away. A mortise cylinder in an older door backs out after its small set screw is loosened, and a rim cylinder on a night latch unscrews from its back plate. Each piece is set aside with its own screws so the door goes back together exactly as it was.

  3. Scene 3

A note for the landlord or building manager

Where a tenancy, a condominium or a commercial lease is involved, the visit ends with a plain written note: which cylinders were rekeyed, how many keys were cut, who received them, and the key code if the property keeps a register. Tenants pass it to the landlord along with the landlord's set of new keys, keeping the paper trail on both sides current. Condominium managers can update the building's key record. A small business can file it with the lease. It is a few lines that save a long conversation later.

What shapes the quoteHeritage Park Locksmith Specialists

Restricted or high-security keyways
Patented and high-security cylinders carry more parts, need dedicated pin kits and issue keys through authorised channels. Rekeying them takes longer and the blanks cost more than common residential ones.
Upgrades chosen during the visit
Some people take the moment to move to a heavier deadbolt, a restricted keyway, a reinforced strike or a lockbox for the spare. None of it is required; each option is a separate line.
Number of keys cut
New keys are cut on site and counted individually. Two for a couple or six for a household with teenagers and a sitter: name the number and the quote reflects it.

You asked, we answered

Can a rekey be done in winter, and will the locks freeze afterwards?

Winter is a normal time for this work. Cylinders come off the door and are pinned in the van, out of the wind, and go back on with a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant that sheds moisture rather than holding it the way oil does. A cleaned, dry-lubricated cylinder is less likely to freeze than the gritty one it replaced. Keeping a storm door closed over the main lock helps through freeze-thaw weeks.

How many new keys should I ask for?

Count the people who genuinely need one and add one for a known spare location: each adult, a teenager, a caregiver or regular sitter, the neighbour who checks the house, the landlord if you rent. Keys are cut on site, so the number is easy to settle during the visit. Fewer keys with names attached is the point; another can always be cut later from the code.

Can all my doors work on one key afterwards?

Usually, yes. Cylinders that share a keyway family accept the same blank, so they can be pinned to one combination during the rekey. The front door, back door, garage entry and a gate padlock of the same family become a single key. Where a door uses a different family, the locksmith can swap its cylinder for a compatible one in the same visit, or you can choose to keep two keys for that door.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 49 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 49% of homes in Kitchener were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In areas with homes from many decades, a locksmith gets to match the solution to the house rather than apply one answer everywhere. Period hardware stays on the houses that suit it; modern security goes where the door and the household want it.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 48% of homes in Kitchener (2021 Census). In a mixed area, a locksmith's advice bends to the building. For a house, the side door and garage entry get attention. For an apartment, the suite door's closer, strike and viewer do. The principle is the same: look at how the door is actually used.
