Moving into a home in Bridgeport means somebody else's keys are still out there: a former owner, a tenant, a painter, a cousin who once watered the plants. Rekeying every exterior lock to one fresh key settles the question in a single visit, and the same job suits a rental turning over or a shop changing hands.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 49 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 49% of homes in Kitchener were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In an area where homes span several eras, one street may have original mortise locks and the next builder-grade cylinders. A locksmith working here carries parts for both, so whichever door he meets, the job finishes in one visit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 48% of homes in Kitchener (2021 Census).Mixed housing brings mixed hardware ages as well as types. A locksmith may rebuild a mortise lock on a semi-detached house and then set up a keypad on a townhouse door across the road, and treats each with the care its owner expects.

Lock Rekeying

Open metal case with brass pins and coiled springs sorted in small sections, with tweezers and a brass tool in front. — Bridgeport
The call
The whole key ring went missing somewhere between the grocery store and the bus. You got back in with the spare, but a set of keys is out there, and you would sleep better knowing they open nothing.

Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Bridgeport
The call
Every morning the front door key needs the same little dance: push in, lift, wiggle, turn. It has been getting worse for a year, and this week it took three tries in the cold before the deadbolt finally gave.

Two loose cam locks and a retaining clip resting below an open metal mailbox compartment. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Bridgeport
The call
The key still turns, but lately it spins a half-circle further than it used to before the little door lets go, and some mornings it takes a second try. The small cam lock inside is simply worn out.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

For a business, high security means the stockroom, the cash office and the server closet hold whatever happens, and a departing manager's key cannot be quietly copied. Restricted keyways, numbered keys and a signed register are how that is achieved.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

Your shop has had four employees leave in two years and each one had a key. Rekeying every time is getting old, and the hardware store will cut a copy for anyone who walks in with the original.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Someone tried the back door while you were away. The jamb is splintered around the strike, the bolt is bent, and the knob turns with a grinding feel.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The old deadbolt has grown lazy. You turn the thumb-turn and the bolt creeps out halfway, then needs a second push with the door pulled tight.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The back door looks closed until you touch it. The edge is crushed where a bar went in, the latch is bent sideways, and the door swings free with a gentle push no matter how you turn the key.

You asked, we answered

Can all my doors be made to work with one key?

Usually, yes. Where the cylinders accept the same style of key blank, each can be pinned to one new combination, so a single key runs the front, back, side and garage doors. A lock from a different keyway family is brought into the group by exchanging its cylinder for a compatible one in the same finish. During the first walk around the property the locksmith reads every keyway and tells you up front which doors can be keyed alike.

Should I rekey my locks or replace them?

Rekey when the hardware is sound and the problem is the key: a lost copy, a move, or too many keys for one house. Replace when the mechanism itself is worn, the housing or bolt is damaged, the grade was never suitable for the entrance, or you want a different function, finish or a keypad. Many visits do both, keeping good locks and rekeying them while replacing the tired ones, all to one key.

Can you fix a mailbox door that is bent or won't close?

Yes. A compartment door that has been pried at, dropped on a loose hinge, or pushed out of square over time is straightened or adjusted as part of the same visit, since a bent door will fight even a brand new lock. The door is worked back into alignment, the hinge or latch checked, and the new lock fitted only once the door closes flush again.

When does a door actually need this hardware rather than a regular lock?

It comes down to occupancy and occupant load rather than preference. Rooms used for assembly, such as banquet halls, places of worship or gyms, and doors serving a stairway in a busier building, are where this hardware becomes the standard choice instead of a keyed lock on the exit side. A fire inspector or building official is the practical way to confirm whether a specific room has crossed that line.
