Things worth knowing

The advice here is the kind you would get from a friend in the trade over a kitchen table: what matters, what does not, what to do about it. Locks for homes, keys for cars, hardware for businesses, and the sensible habits that keep all of them working.

What if my wallet and every document are locked inside?

That is the most common version of a lockout, and there is a routine for it. Tell the locksmith on the phone so the plan is agreed before arrival. Often a neighbour can confirm you live there, a digital copy of a lease or bill is on your phone, or a property manager can vouch for you. Where none of that is available, the locksmith opens the door and completes the identification check with the documents inside before leaving. Home Lockout Service

Our storefront lock freezes every winter. What do you do about it?

On the day, the cylinder is thawed with lock de-icer or gentle warmth, never hot water or a flame near aluminium, and dried before a moisture-shedding dry lubricant goes in. To stop the pattern, the keyway gets a cover on the most exposed door, salt is kept off the bottom rail, and the closer is adjusted for cold fluid so the door still latches. A cylinder that freezes yearly may be better placed or shielded. Business Lockout Service

Why did my key break at all?

Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied. Broken Key Extraction

Will my door be boarded up, or can it be made to lock tonight?

Most forced doors lock again during the visit. If the slab and frame are sound, a new lockset goes in and the strike is reinforced. If the jamb is split, a repair plate or a boxed strike screwed into the stud usually holds it. Boarding is reserved for openings where the frame or the door itself is destroyed, and even then it is fitted so the household can get out from inside without a key. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Can all my doors be made to work with one key?

Usually, yes. Where the cylinders accept the same style of key blank, each can be pinned to one new combination, so a single key runs the front, back, side and garage doors. A lock from a different keyway family is brought into the group by exchanging its cylinder for a compatible one in the same finish. During the first walk around the property the locksmith reads every keyway and tells you up front which doors can be keyed alike. Lock Rekeying

The door has to be pulled before the old bolt will lock. Will a new one fix that?

The new bolt will only lock as smoothly as the door and frame let it, so the locksmith deals with the cause as part of the installation. A door that has sagged on loose hinges gets longer hinge screws or a shim, thick weatherstrip is trimmed, and the strike is set from the bolt's actual position with the door closed. The pocket is bored deep enough for a full throw. Afterwards the bolt should slide with fingertip effort. Deadbolt Installation

Should I rekey my locks or replace them?

Rekey when the hardware is sound and the problem is the key: a lost copy, a move, or too many keys for one house. Replace when the mechanism itself is worn, the housing or bolt is damaged, the grade was never suitable for the entrance, or you want a different function, finish or a keypad. Many visits do both, keeping good locks and rekeying them while replacing the tired ones, all to one key. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Can you match a missing knob, plate or thumb-turn?

Often, yes. Locksmiths who work on older hardware keep salvage and reproduction trim in the common patterns and finishes, and a knob, rosette or escutcheon can usually be found close enough that the pair on one door match. Where nothing suitable exists, the trim from a less visible door can be moved to the entry and the reproduction fitted where it is seen less. Bring or photograph the surviving piece so it can be matched. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

My electronic safe lock has a dead battery. Do you still need to drill it?

Usually not. It depends on the model. Some electronic locks offer an external contact for a fresh battery, or a mechanical override key behind a cover plate; restoring power this way wakes a dead keypad but does not bypass a lost code on its own. Others have a reset port on the lock body, which sits inside the safe and still needs the door opened by other means first. The locksmith works through that model's own documented procedure before considering anything more invasive. Safe Opening & Combination Change

What kind of floor can a safe be anchored to?

Solid concrete is the most straightforward surface, taking a masonry anchor bolt directly. A wood subfloor works too, provided the anchoring reaches into the floor joists beneath the surface layer rather than just the plywood or the flooring on top. Tile is the awkward case, since a bolt through it tends to crack the surrounding tiles, and an alternative anchoring point or a different spot in the room is usually the better route there. Safe Installation & Servicing

What is bumping, and does this stop it?

Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck while under light turning pressure, bouncing the pins to the shear line for an instant so an ordinary cylinder opens. It works on many standard pin tumblers. A high security cylinder needs its sidebar released by separately positioned finger or rotating pins at the same moment, and a bump key cannot set those, so the plug stays locked. It is one of the clearest advantages of the upgrade. High Security Locks

How often should a business change its keys as a matter of routine?

There is no fixed interval. Rekey on events rather than on a calendar: a key not returned, a lease change, a break-in, a renovation crew finished, or a key count that no longer matches the register. Businesses with a good register and a restricted keyway often go years between rekeys because nothing prompts one. A yearly check of the register against the keys on the hook is the habit that tells you when the time has come. Commercial Rekeying

What happens to the old keys once a new system is cut?

Once the new pinning is tested and confirmed working, the old keys no longer operate the cylinders they used to, whether or not they are physically collected back. Collecting them anyway is good practice, since it closes the loop on how many old copies were in circulation and lets the business retire them rather than wonder where they ended up. Master Key System Design

Does a door still need a mechanical key at all once it's on the system?

Not always — it depends on the hardware chosen for that door. Where a mechanical override cylinder is fitted and keyed in, it can still be opened by key regardless of what happens to the electronics, the network, or the power supply, and it is meant as a backup rather than a daily habit, since using it routinely bypasses the entry record the system is there to keep. Access Control Installation

When does a door actually need this hardware rather than a regular lock?

It comes down to occupancy and occupant load rather than preference. Rooms used for assembly, such as banquet halls, places of worship or gyms, and doors serving a stairway in a busier building, are where this hardware becomes the standard choice instead of a keyed lock on the exit side. A fire inspector or building official is the practical way to confirm whether a specific room has crossed that line. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys

My car has push-button start. Does that change anything?

It changes what happens after the door is open. Entry is the same as any other car. Starting depends on the immobiliser recognising a fob, so if your fob's battery is dead you hold it against the start button or in a marked pocket in the console, which the locksmith shows you. If the fob itself is lost, a new one is programmed where the vehicle's own security system supports it, though some models need dealer credentials, tools or parts first. Car Lockout Service

Can a key be made for an older car with no chip?

Yes, for a vehicle that genuinely has no immobilizer, checked by VIN and equipment rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer and coded key. Where that is the case, it is the simplest key work there is: a blade cut to the factory code from the VIN or to a reading of the door lock, rather than copied from a worn original. If the ignition has become sloppy, the locksmith can rebuild it in the same visit. Car Key Replacement

Is it possible to leave out certain functions on the spare, like remote start?

Yes. A spare can be built to do everything the first key does, or scaled back to just the blade and chip that unlock a door and start the engine, without a remote start button or a trunk release. This is agreed before programming begins and is a deliberate choice rather than a lesser copy, useful for a valet, a young driver, or anyone the household wants kept to essential access. Spare Car Key Duplication

What is the difference between a remote, a transponder key and a proximity fob?

A basic remote only operates the locks and alarm from a distance while a separate metal key still starts the engine. A transponder key combines a cut blade with a chip the immobilizer reads before allowing a start. A proximity fob goes further: it authorizes entry while it is nearby, though most vehicles still need the handle touched, gripped or pressed to actually unlock, and it starts the engine with a push button, with no key insertion needed day to day. Each type is programmed differently. Key Fob Programming
